Tech giant Apple has introduced the newest version of its iOS operating system, iOS 13 on the 3rd of June at the keynote event of the 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference. And to the surprise, the new iOS is packed with a long list of new iOS 13 updated features.
Apple continued with its old optimization trend introduced in iOS 12, making iOS 13 even faster and more efficient than ever. All the app update times have been improved along with the app launch times that are two times faster whereas the app download sizes have been reduced by up to 50 percent. Moving on to the Face ID, it is 30 percent faster than before.
Apple’s software engineering director Craig Federighi announced that Apple users will experience a dramatic new look with its dark mode along with exploring functional updates of Photos, Maps, Messages and much more. Furthermore, users will be able to manage their privacy and security way better than iOS 12.3.
And there is more to cherish in the iOS 13, so without further ado, let’s dig deeper and check out the things to Know About the iOS 13 Update and what features do iOS 13 have –
13 features to look in new iOS 13
1. Dark Mode:
Dark mode, one of the most talked-about features for iPhone is finally here with the introduction of iOS 13.
The brand new dark mode not only gives iOS and its application a beautiful dark color screen but can also boost the device’s battery life.
The new dark mode is perfect for low-light environments and it’s easier for your eyes; especially when you are in a dark room or a theatre.
Dark mode turns on and off based on sunrise and sunset and beautifully integrates from the built-in application and settings to system-level views.
2. SignIn with Apple:
We are familiar with the method of logging into third-party applications and websites using social credentials such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. This reduces the hassle of creating a new account for logging into the applications and websites as the user can use their social credentials for the same.
Though the concept is quite convenient it comes up with the cost of users’ privacy. Your personal information can be shared behind the scenes and the leaked information can be used to track the user.
But with iOS 13, there is a solution to combat such privacy issues- the solution is called “Sign In with Apple” with a simple API. “Sign In with Apple” is the fast and easy way to sign in to the applications through your ios 13 compatible devices. There is no barrier of platforms and it also works on all your Apple devices as well as the web and Android or Windows application. You just tap it, and you are authenticated with face id on your device and logged in with a new account without revealing any personal information.
With iOS 13 users can share their actual email address while getting an option to hide it also. And when you choose to hide your email, Apple creates a unique random email address and forward it to the real address.
3. HomeKit Secure Video:
The footage captured by the cameras installed in our home are highly sensitive and personal and you definitely do not want those footages to fall into the hands of wrong and inappropriate media. So, here are all the changes coming to HomeKit in iOS 13.
With iOS 13’s HomeKit Secure Video, all of your security camera footage gets end-to-end encryption before it gets securely uploaded and stored in iCloud.
Right now, HomeKit Secure Video is free with existing iCloud accounts, and the storage that the footage requires won’t count against your storage plan. However, there are few storage limitations based on how much storage you’ve signed up for.
4. Siri Shortcuts:
Siri Shortcuts include more than 300 actions that leverage your favorite integrated apps like – Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Maps, Safari, Photos, Camera, Music, and Health – as well as third-party apps such as Waze, Amazon Prime Video and Grocery. A few of its examples are-
- Once you flit into your car and say “Heading to work”, SIRI will get your estimated time of arrival (ETA) while hearing about your first calendar event. With it, you can also start an Apple Music playlist along with getting directions that take real-time traffic into account.
- With the help of SIRI shortcuts, you can easily pay the tip after enjoying your meal at a restaurant.
- No matter where you are, say “Directions home” and you will get driving directions back to your home. Furthermore, you can also enjoy listening to your favorite music or listen to the news. Moreover, sending your ETA with someone else is also easy with SIRI shortcuts.
5. Augmented Reality:
No doubt, this is the biggest year of Augmented Reality as many technology companies are integrating this technology into their system. And if we talk about iOS 13, the integration of Augmented Reality in it is one of the most noticeable features.
In the new iOS 13, developers integrate people’s actions and movements into the application through AR. Furthermore, the content generated from the AR looks a lot natural not just from the front but also from behind making the overall experience more fun and unbelievable.
6. Swipe Typing:
Like Google’s keyboard, swipe typing is enabled by default in iOS 13. When you start typing a word, swipe your finger to each different letter without lifting your finger. Be careful not to press too hard, as you might accidentally activate the digital trackpad. Once you’re done with the word, lift your finger and iOS will leave a space so you can start typing the next word. There’s no need to press the spacebar. To start the next word, just repeat the process.
In iOS 13, Apple has updated its Safari Browser with some exciting enhancements. In the updated Safari Browser, there is an updated start page that gives users the ability to access their favorite websites easily along with letting them get access to download manager whenever they download any file from Safari.
8. Apple Maps:
Seven years ago, Apple replaced Google Maps with its own Apple Maps service in iOS 6, and the rollout was nothing short of disastrous. Apple Maps was inferior to Google Maps in every way be it features, stability, accuracy, performance—you name it. Now the Apple map now pops up in the top new ios 13 features.
It took two years to clear out the bugs, and Apple has spent the last several years languishing behind Google with a dated, less-detailed data set and a dearth of features. About the only thing Apple Maps has going for it is that it respects your privacy.
This time with iOS 13, Apple maps are coming up as a game-changer while taking care of the user’s privacy. There are a number of changes you can see in the map like the addition of beaches, roads, buildings, and multiple other areas. Furthermore, there is also an introduction of another feature on the main screen in addition to a new collection menu for organizing the trips plans and favorites.
Another feature called ‘Look Around’ has been added which would enable you to see a location before visiting them along with getting a Label option that would get you details about the specific location.
9. Zip and Unzip in Files App:
Good news for all iPad users- With iOS 13 you get a new files app which lets you zip and unzip files straight from your iOS device without using any 3rd party application in ios 13 compatible devices.
10. New Messaging, Memoji, and Animoji:
New Messaging, Memoji, and Animoji are the most remarkable top new ios 13 features.
To the iMessage service, Apple has included a new message feature with it’s brand new Memojis and Animoji collections. You can add a profile picture as well as change your name.
Now, it’s easier to send emojis and stickers through text. A new class of Emojis and Animoji that includes jewelry, hats, teeth, and glasses are now available on iOS 13. The operating system will automatically generate sticker packs based on your emoji and Animoji characters to express a range of emotions in messages with their latest iPhone development technology.
11. Full page screenshot and video rotate:
Full page screenshot and video rotate one of the top new ios 13 features. In iOS13, users can take a full-page screenshot along with rotating a video when they are watching something on their phone.
12. Photos and camera:
Users can notice improvements in iOS photos and camera applications. There is a brand new camera portrait lighting named “ High-key Mono”. It’s a real-world photo studio developed by Apple which makes users move lights closer and further from the subject. Now users can see them at a glance, and adjustments can be made with a tap and a drag. Adjustment tab in iOS 13 is filled with Brilliance, Highlights, Shadows, Contrast, Saturation, Auto enhance, Vibrance, White balance, Sharpen, Definition, Vignette, and Noise Reduction.
13. iPad OS:
From the beginning, the iPad has been built on the technical foundations of iOS. With its giant canvas and some powerful features like slide over, split view, drag and drop and apple pencil; the iPad delivers a truly distinct experience.
Users can browse files in the way of the list view, icon view or column view. Meanwhile, in the column view, the user will get the file preview, quick actions( like rotate images, making PDF) along with getting great rich metadata right to the bottom.
Furthermore, users can silent unknown callers by sending unknown callers directly to voicemail in a low data mode. For enterprise customers, iOS 13 has gained an ability to Single Sign-On to enterprise accounts while having separate iCloud accounts for their personal and work lives.
The official release is scheduled in September after the launch of the next iPhone meanwhile a beta version is available for curious developers. The real-world implications can only be gauged once the final version with new Apple Arcade of the iOS 13 rolls out this fall, but things are indeed looking up.
