Alert! Here is the latest tech update from Apple as it agrees to let reader apps link their own web portals for direct signup. Let’s highlight some key points of this noteworthy news story.
Are you the one who can’t imagine a day without using e-reader apps? If your answer is ‘yes’ then you need no introduction to the sign-up restrictions with so-called reader apps like Amazon Kindle, Netflix, & Spotify.
Ahh, it is pretty frustrating when you see a message, “You can’t sign up for Netflix in the app. We know it’s a hassle,” that pops up when you try to sign in to your account.
No more hassles as Apple’s recent move to enable direct sign-up for reader apps users seems to clear out this issue for users as well as developers of custom mobile apps for business.
What’s Important for Readers on Netflix, Amazon Kindle, Hulu, & Spotify?
Ever since the day Apple made changes to its app review guidelines, developers are alleging the company’s attempt to cover up the controversy of imposing users of ‘reader’ apps to pay for new subscriptions despite being existing premium members.
Apart from Apple app store statistics, it’s worthful to mention its recent accordance with popular reader apps that allows their developers to link their customers to their existing signup website. A press release by Apple confirms the company’s decision to allow apps like Netflix and Hulu to direct their users to simply sign into their existing accounts without paying for new subscriptions on its app store.
A report by JFTC, a commission that has been heading the investigation since 2016 also mentions Apple’s consent to share the status of app review transparency once a year for the next 3 consecutive years in a row.
Apple’s response to defend its notions with a proposal to update the app review guidelines for iOS app development experts was produced as a response from the company’s end.
What’s new for E-book App Developers (Netflix, Amazon Kindle, & Spotify only)?
The category of reader apps encloses some of the top trending mobile apps revolutionizing the entertainment industry these days. Apple’s new announcement for the developers of Netflix, Kindle, Hulu, & Spotify will now enable users to sign up outside the app on their website link to continue with their mobile app reading experience.
According to Apple’s statement, only developers of these prominent reader apps are permitted to share their own website’s link so that app users can directly set up & manage their existing accounts instead of taking new subscriptions.
Besides witnessing a limited scope with this update, developers are more opportune to protect customers while directing them to sign up on these popular e-book or reader apps (Netflix, Kindle, Hulu, & Spotify) from outside of the iOS app store.
Other Keynotes of Apple’s Reader App Update
By allowing reader apps to attach an in-app link to the website, Apple has introduced a lot of changes to update its app review guidelines for the sake of better ‘account management’ for users.
Here is a part of a statement by Apple’s CEO, Tim Sweeney,
“Before the change goes into effect in early 2022, Apple will update its guidelines and review process to make sure users of reader apps continue to have a safe experience on the App Store. While in-app purchases through the App Store commerce system remain the safest and most trusted payment methods for users, Apple will also help developers of reader apps protect users when they link them to an external website to make purchases.”
After presenting WWDC 2021 Apple live updates, the company once again made a buzz with its alleged settlement for an investigation under Japan’s Fair Trade Commission (JFTC). To settle the case, Apple was fined $100 million to make a few changes to its app store policies. However, the changes in app review policy & guidelines will be available globally at the beginning of 2022.
While the changes are limited to reader apps only, the apps based on augmented reality games would remain deterred from taking the benefits of this update. The good news is that all those seasoned developers won’t have to spend a huge amount on app-store payments while publishing their reader apps on the Apple app store.
